2. Line of March: The sequence of entries will be determined in advance of Parade Day on Friday, August 10th.

3. Each entry of 10 or more persons must provide two Marshals who are responsible for keeping the street clear around their own entry along the entire parade route. NOTE: They accompany the float/entry, but they are not participants in/on your entry. They must be free and undistracted to monitor the crowds.

4. All parade participants must be in place by 2:00 PM at The Harbor Hotel (formerly the Cape Inn Resort), 698 Commercial Street on Thursday, August 16, 2012. All entries must check-in upon arrival to obtain an entry number and assigned place in the line-of-march.

5. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are NOT tolerated and police officers will monitor, search, and confiscate any and all contraband. Do not have alcohol delivered to floats during the parade, the State Fine is $500 per open container.

6. Do not throw candy or edibles from the floats since many pieces do not get picked up and end up pressed into the hot pavement making the street hard to clean.

7. Beads, tokens and small non-food items are acceptable. Common sense also dictates that any object that might injure someone in the crowd is not acceptable. If you are not sure, ask your Formation Marshal before the Parade steps off or the Parade Chair before parade day.

The total parade route runs 2.7 miles, so pace your throwaways so that you run out just about the same time you reach the Coast Guard Station.

Suggestions

When designing your entry, remember that music and sound bring energy to the parade. Make your entry festive, colorful and tastefully outrageous — this is Carnival time! We ask that all entrants participate in a manner that reflects the diversity of our community—a diversity that includes children who will be watching the festivities. Good taste and good fun are the order of the day. Nudity is strictly prohibited.

Definitions

Large Float Entry

A large float entry is one where the prime vehicle is an SUV, pickup or large truck with a trailer or flatbed attached. The width of the entry at its widest point cannot exceed 9 feet decorated. The length of any one separate part cannot exceed 30 feet so as to comfortably turn corners on Provincetown streets. The height cannot exceed 12 feet at its highest point so as to fit under the street flags.

Small Float Entry

A small float entry is one where a motorized vehicle is used. The overall size must not surpass the basic dimensions of the truck/car by more than 18 inches on each side. The height cannot exceed 12 feet at its highest point so as to fit under the street flags. This includes, but is not limited to trucks, cars, motorcycles and scooters. This does not include motorized wheelchairs or scooters used by persons with physical disabilities.

Self-Propelled Entry

A self-propelled entry is one that includes participants that propel their vehicles. This includes, but is not limited to, unicycles, bicycles, tricycles, recumbent bikes, conference bikes, pedi-cabs, pull-carts, rollerblades and skateboards.

Walking Entry

A walking entry is one where all the participants in a group are on foot with no vehicle involved. Motorized wheelchairs or scooters used by persons with a physical disability are considered a walking entry.

Parade Formation

The Parade will form at the Harbor Hotel according to order-of-march. Because of the space and movement required, all Large Float entries will be lined up on Snail Road where they will be integrated by the Formation Marshals into the line-of-march at the junction of Commercial St.

Parade Marshals

Our parade permit requires us to have Parade Marshals. This safety rule will assure the smooth flow of the parade and will help keep the crowds safely back to the curb. Each participating float entry and all walking entries of 10 or more persons must provide 2 Marshals. The marshals will receive appropriate tee shirts identifying them as Marshals.

Parade Route & Judging

The parade departs from the Harbor Hotel parking lot and runs the entire length of Commercial St. to the Coast Guard Station at Franklin St. Interruption of the flow of the parade with any stop/ slowdown activity is forbidden. (Dancing, etc. must be performed within the movement of the parade.) Stopping to perform creates gaps that disrupt the parade. They will not be tolerated. Entries that deliberately hold up the parade will be disqualified from winning any prizes.

Entries competing for prizes will be given a registration number on 2 display cards. Display your entry number on the left and right sides of your unit so that the judges can see them readily.

Parade Route Activities

All units must continue the line of march all the way to Franklin St to assure that West Enders also get to see the parade. (Remember that they have waited the longest for you to arrive!)

Insurance

Proof of insurance for each vehicle is required. Please provide a copy with registration form. Police will verify all vehicles for proper registration and sobriety of drivers.

Hydration

Please keep in mind that participants will be on Commercial Street where there will be full exposure to the sun. Be sure to hydrate and wear sunscreen. Once you begin the parade route, you will be in the line-of-march for about 60 to 90 minutes. Carry enough water with your entry to last the entire length of the parade.
